A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children affected by cancer by helping them explore their artistic passions. Through art, music, writing, acting, and other creative pathways, we provide emotional support, enrichment, and opportunities for healing. Our Programs Department—Dream Big, Take Flight, and Fly Free—connects children with professional artists, tutors, and organizations that help them develop their craft.
We are seeking highly motivated volunteers to join our Programs team and support the coordination of arts-focused experiences for our participants. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about nonprofit work, relationship-building, and creating meaningful opportunities for young people in the arts.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, initiate, and maintain professional relationships with schools, hospitals, arts organizations, and other child-focused programs.
- Act as a liaison between affiliates and A Free Bird participants, ensuring clear communication and timely follow-through.
- Support the coordination of arts experiences by matching children with professional artists, tutors, or partner organizations.
- Track ongoing program initiatives and ensure project milestones continue to move forward.
- Collaborate with the Communications Department to support program-related outreach, engagement, and updates.
- Maintain organized program records and prepare usage or performance reports as needed.
Qualifications
- 1–2+ years of experience in nonprofits, arts education, human services, or a related field (preferred but not required).
- Bachelor’s degree or current pursuit of a degree in psychology, sociology, education, social work, arts administration, or related areas.
- Strong relationship-building skills and experience working with community partners, schools, hospitals, or similar organizations.
- Familiarity with digital communication tools and platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Sendinblue, CRM systems) is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; professional, timely, and empathetic communication style.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a remote setting.
- Proficient with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.

- This is a remote volunteer role requiring 5–10 hours per week.
- A minimum 3-month commitment is required; levels of responsibility may vary based on experience.
- Internship credit is offered when applicable.
