Are you someone who listens with your heart and speaks with gentle kindness? We are seeking dedicated volunteers to join our Bereavement Support Team. In this sacred role, you will offer a bridge of connection and comfort by reaching out to individuals and families following the passing of a loved one. Your calls will serve as a vital, initial gesture of support, letting them know they are not alone in their grief.
💖 Statement of Responsibilities
As a Condolence Call Volunteer, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Compassionate Outreach: Initiate scheduled, non-invasive telephone calls to recently bereaved individuals or families following established protocols.
- Active, Empathetic Listening: Provide a safe, non-judgmental space for the bereaved to speak about their loved one or their current feelings, without offering unsolicited advice or opinions.
- Resource Connection: Gently share information about our organization's ongoing bereavement support services (e.g., support groups, counseling referrals, written materials) and clarify how they can access them, if and when they are ready.
- Documentation: Accurately and confidentially log call attempts, outcomes, and any specific requests for follow-up support in accordance with privacy guidelines.
- Maintaining Boundaries: Honor the brief and supportive nature of the initial call, recognizing that your role is to offer condolence and connection, not intensive counseling.
✨ Qualifications and Attributes
The most important qualifications for this role are rooted in your character and capacity for empathy. We are looking for individuals who possess:
- Deep Empathy and Sensitivity: A genuine capacity to understand and share the feelings of another, especially those experiencing pain and sorrow.
- Excellent Communication Skills: A clear, warm, and gentle telephone presence. The ability to speak calmly, choose words with care, and avoid clichés or platitudes.

- Respect for Confidentiality: A firm commitment to maintaining the privacy and dignity of all individuals and families served.
- Reliability and Consistency: The ability to commit to a consistent schedule for making calls and to follow through on all documentation requirements.
- Training Attendance: A willingness to fully participate in required training sessions on grief dynamics, effective communication techniques, and organizational policies.
