    Description

Board of Directors - Sausalito Community Boating Center

Board Member – Sausalito Community Boating Center

Organization: Sausalito Community Boating Center (SCBC)

    Location: Sausalito, CA

Position Type: Volunteer, Elected (2-year term)

    About Us

The Sausalito Community Boating Center (SCBC) at Cass Gidley Marina is dedicated to providing accessible boating experiences for all, preserving maritime heritage through education and skill-building, and promoting environmental stewardship of our local bay ecosystem. We foster a love for the water and empower individuals of all ages to enjoy and care for our shared waterways.

    Position Overview

Board Members serve as key ambassadors, advisors, and leaders guiding the strategic direction, sustainability, and community impact of SCBC. Each member contributes their unique expertise and passion to ensure the organization fulfills its mission.

Board members are elected to two-year terms, with approximately half of the board renewing each year. Officers (President, Secretary, and Treasurer) are elected from within the board for one-year terms. All board members are expected to lead or serve on at least one active committee throughout their term.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Governance & Strategy: Participate in decision-making and long-term planning to ensure SCBC’s programs and operations align with its mission and values. Fulfill fiduciary and governance responsibilities on behalf of the public and community.
    • Committee Leadership: Lead or actively serve on at least one of SCBC’s standing committees:
      • Programming Committee: Oversees community and educational boating programs, with a focus on youth and inclusive participation.
      • Facilities Committee: Supports dock, site, and infrastructure maintenance and planning.
      • Fleet Committee: Helps manage, maintain, and plan for SCBC’s boats and equipment.
      • Events & Fundraising Committee: Organizes and expands fundraising activities, including our two successful annual events — the Herring Festival and the Oyster Festival.
    • Community Engagement: Represent SCBC in the community, fostering partnerships and participation.
    • Advocacy & Outreach: Promote SCBC’s mission through personal and professional networks, and participate in community events.
    • Accountability & Participation: Attend monthly board meetings (currently the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in Sausalito; subject to rescheduling by the new board in December 2025) and contribute actively to discussions and decisions.

    Qualifications

We welcome applicants from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds who share an interest in community, education, and the waterfront. Ideal candidates bring experience or enthusiasm in areas such as nonprofit governance, community programming, facilities or fleet maintenance or management, event planning, fundraising, or finance.

At this time, SCBC is particularly seeking board members with experience in:

    • Youth programming (boating-related or general youth education/engagement)
    • Fundraising, donor relations, or private giving development

Board members should be prepared to fulfill their fiduciary and governance responsibilities as part of a working volunteer board.

    Commitment

This is a volunteer position requiring approximately 5–10 hours per month, including board meetings, email correspondence, committee participation, and events. Board members are also expected to complete any required safety or orientation trainings.

    How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a brief cover letter and resume outlining their relevant experience and interest in joining the board. Applications received by November 16, 2025 will be considered by the nominating committee for interview in late November and election prior to the December 17, 2025 Board Meeting.

Join us in helping people of all ages and backgrounds connect with the beauty of the waterfront through boating, education, and community engagement.
