    Description

    BACKGROUND

    Every day, Neighborhood House builds community and increases access to housing, health, education, and economic opportunities for low-income, immigrants and refugees across Seattle and King County. Since 1906, Neighborhood House has advanced our mission to partner with individuals and families to build community and increase access to housing, health, education, and economic opportunity. Our programs focus on early childhood education, youth development, employment and adult education, housing assistance, community health, and aging and disability services throughout King County, WA.

    PROGRAM SCOPE

    Neighborhood House’s Youth Engagement Program offers academic assistance, engagement through project based learning and social emotional learning, as well as other supports to youth and their families. We are seeking volunteers to engage with youth in grades K-5. The K–5 Program Pal supports Neighborhood House’s mission by mentoring and engaging elementary-aged youth (kindergarten through 5th grade) in after-school and enrichment activities. Volunteers help facilitate positive relationships, encourage participation in group activities, and model respect, teamwork, and kindness.

    Assist in program activities for K5 youth which includes art, social-emotional learning, games, sports, homework help and projects

    Help create a safe welcoming space for youth to build skills, friends, and community

    Be a cheerleader to encourage our youth and inspire a growth mindset

    Share your unique passions and skills

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assist staff in leading and supervising after-school activities, including homework help, arts and crafts, reading, and recreation.
    • Build supportive and positive relationships with youth to promote confidence and a sense of belonging.
    • Encourage respectful communication and cooperation among students.
    • Help maintain a safe and welcoming program environment by following staff guidance and organizational policies.
    • Provide one-on-one or small-group academic or social support as needed.
    • Participate in occasional program meetings or training sessions for volunteers

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Enthusiasm for working with children in grades K–5.
    • Ability to engage with diverse youth and families in a respectful, inclusive manner.
    • Reliable, patient, and flexible with a positive attitude.
    • Good communication and teamwork skills.
    • Prior experience with youth (tutoring, mentoring, childcare, etc.) preferred but not required.
    • Must complete background check and volunteer orientation prior to service.
