Position Overview
The HR / People Operations Lead is responsible for developing and supporting the Foundation’s human resources and people operations functions. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role focuses on creating clear processes, compliance practices, and a positive experience for staff, volunteers, and leadership.
This role is ideal for an HR professional who wants to apply their expertise in a mission-driven, early-stage nonprofit environment.
Key Responsibilities
People Operations & HR Infrastructure
- Develop and maintain HR policies, procedures, and employee/volunteer handbooks
- Support onboarding and off boarding processes for staff and volunteers
- Maintain personnel records and HR documentation
Compliance & Risk Management
- Support compliance with employment laws and nonprofit HR best practices
- Assist leadership with role classifications, volunteer agreements, and acknowledgments
- Partner with leadership on risk management and workplace policies
Recruitment & Support
- Coordinate recruitment and onboarding for volunteer and staff roles
- Support leadership with job descriptions and role clarity
- Serve as a point of contact for people-related questions and concerns
Culture & Engagement
- Support initiatives that promote inclusion, engagement, and retention
- Partner with leadership on performance feedback and development processes
- Help foster a positive, respectful, and mission-aligned culture
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with the COO and leadership team to support organizational growth
- Coordinate with finance and operations on people-related processes
- Assist with internal communications and documentation
Qualifications
- Experience in human resources, people operations, or related fields
- Knowledge of HR compliance and best practices (nonprofit experience preferred)
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion
- Proactive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented mindset
- Passion for mission-driven work
Time Commitment
- Approximately 6–8 hours per week
- Flexible schedule; occasional availability for leadership meetings may be required
