    Description

We are looking for help with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

We run a VITA site in conjunction with the IRS and the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg. Tax clients can choose between drop-off/virtual or in-person appointments. This program is a vital service to residents of Greater Fulton and East Henrico. We had 153 accepted tax returns in our 2025 tax season, returning $150,000 in refunds to our tax clients.

    Our available opportunities are:

    • Screener/Intake: Welcomes all clients, reviews tax documents, and will scan documents for drop off/virtual appointments.
      • In-person only with late afternoon/evening Tuesday/Thursday shifts and/or one Saturday morning each month during tax season
    • Basic & Advanced Tax Preparers: Prepares returns based on the documentation that is provided by tax clients using the online tax software that's provisioned to us by the IRS.
      • Virtual or in-person options. In-person shifts are usually one day a week from late afternoon to early evening and/or one Saturday morning each month. Virtual preparation is fully flexible and is based entirely on your schedule.

    Timeframe: Mid-February to April 15, 2026

Experience: No tax experience is required! All roles must know how to use a computer and email. Screener/intake volunteers must also be able to be trained to use a scanner.

Training: Training is available through the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg. We can also provide in-person or virtual training. The ability to pass online IRS virtual testing is required to serve in any role. The length of testing depends on the role. A hard copy of the test as well as all materials are provided to you by the NRC, thanks to the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg.

We require the completion of a virtual volunteer orientation via Google Meet and a visit to our center to complete a volunteer application before volunteering for your first shift. Virtual volunteers must also bring their laptops to our building for a device security check.
