Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: 2–4 hrs/week
Commitment: 6–12 months
Role Summary
Supports the nonprofit with governance, compliance, contracts, policies, and organizational structure. Helps ensure all documents, partnerships, and board operations are legally sound and aligned with federal and Illinois nonprofit law.
Key Responsibilities
- Review bylaws, board structure, and governance documents
- Ensure Illinois Charitable Trust, state tax-exempt status, and 501(c)(3) compliance
- Review and help draft Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)
- Support risk management strategies (liability, safety protocols, documentation)
- Assist with updating or reviewing organizational policies and procedures
- Provide legal oversight for partnerships, programs, and community initiatives
- Ensure the nonprofit adheres to trauma-informed and ethical legal practices
- Review volunteer agreements, waivers, media releases, and donor policies
Qualifications
- Licensed Illinois attorney in good standing
- Experience in nonprofit law OR contract law OR organizational compliance
- Familiarity with Illinois Attorney General Charitable Trust Requirements
- Understanding of 501(c)(3) regulations and federal/state filings
- Trauma-informed mindset & commitment to survivor-centered work
- Must pass background check
