Our popular book-club “Reading With Friends” program is a fun way to build confidence and critical reading skills for academic success in middle school, high school and beyond. The program is 100% online so you can join from anywhere convenient.
Middle-school students will select one book from a reading list and will be in a group with a volunteer high-school mentor reading the same book. (Selected books are readily available in libraries.)
FORMAT
TIMING
Runs for 6 weeks on Thursdays at 4:30 PM Pacific Time
From Oct 30 - Dec 11 (skip Thanksgiving week)
BENEFITS FOR HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
What we’d look for in the mentor:
– genuine interest in reading
– interest in helping a younger student from a very different and less advantaged background
– the ability to offer patient support in reading/understanding when needed,
– and capacity to have positive, confidence-building conversations with the student.
We request that the mentors commit to attending every session and engage in supportive interactions while maintaining the requirements for safety and privacy.
IMPORTANT!
The first class starts on Thursday October 30 at 4:30 pm Pacific Time.
