Are you compassionate, empathetic, and good at making friends? Do you enjoy sharing a burden to make it lighter, and being there when people need help the most? Join our team of incredible hospice volunteers, and help our patients and families navigate a hard journey with grace and peace.
Our volunteers don't need experience in healthcare - just kindness, reliability, and the willingness to help a neighbor facing a hard time.
Volunteers can provide companionship to a patient doing activities like singing, reading aloud, chatting, watching tv or movies, listening to music or just holding a hand.
They can provide respite to family members who are exhausted by the task of full-time caregiving, and need a few hours a week to take care of themselves.
Volunteers can even help in our office by writing cards to patients, helping with administrative tasks, and making sure things are running smoothly behind the scenes so our patients get the best care possible.
We ask our volunteers to pass a background check (which requires a social security number) and get a Tb and drug test (for drugs not legal in IL). We provide extensive orientation so that no one enters a situation feeling unprepared. We can work with most schedules, but prefer that a volunteer have weekly availability for a few hours, and be willing to commit to this for 9 months or longer. Volunteering in hospice is much easier if a volunteer has a vehicle, as we serve patients & families wherever they call home, be it their own home or that of a family member, a nursing home, an assisted living or independent living facility.
Volunteers are the heart of hospice. They allow us to go above and beyond, to make our families and patients feel cared for on a deeper level, and to remind them that their community is here for them. If you think this role sounds like a good fit - we'd love to have you!
