About Us
Skills of LIfe Cafe empowers neurodiverse teens and young adults, including those with mild
intellectual disabilities, through vocational training in a real-world café setting. Our mission is to
build inclusive workforce pathways and skills for long-term success and independence.
Role Summary
The President of the Board of Directors provides leadership and strategic direction to the
board and the organization. As a volunteer position, the President chairs board meetings,
ensures effective governance, supports the Executive Director, and champions the mission and
vision of the nonprofit.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and facilitate all Board of Directors meetings, ensuring productive and focused
discussions
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Director to support organizational leadership and
strategy
- Ensure the board fulfills its governance responsibilities including legal compliance,
financial oversight, and policy development
- Lead board recruitment, orientation, and development efforts to maintain a strong and
engaged board
- Represent the organization at public events, fundraisers, and community engagements
as needed
- Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the organization’s mission
- Foster a positive, collaborative board culture that encourages participation and
accountability
- Oversee annual board self-assessment and support ongoing board improvement
- Work with committees and advisory groups to align board activities with organizational
goals
Qualifications
- Passion for the mission of supporting neurodiverse youth and workforce inclusion
- Experience serving on nonprofit boards or in leadership roles preferred
- Strong leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage diverse board members
- Strategic thinker with good judgment and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable representing the organization publicly
- Commitment to ethical governance and transparency
Time Commitment
- Approx. 3-6 hours/month (including board meetings, planning sessions, and events)
- Attendance at all regular board meetings and key events (virtual or in-person)
- Availability for consultation and communication with Executive Director and board
members between meetings
