    Description

    Women Empowered International (WEI) is seeking highly engaged, volunteer professionals to serve as At-Large Directors on its Board. This is a critical role responsible for providing expert strategic oversight on program efficacy, risk management, and resource mobilization across both our global and U.S. domestic programs. We require directors who can fulfill full fiduciary duties and contribute essential professional expertise.

    Meetings

    Quarterly Board meetings (virtual), plus monthly committee meetings.

    Full fiduciary duty to ensure legal and financial integrity.

    Position Summary

    The At-Large Director serves as a subject matter expert, leveraging their senior-level experience to guide the organization's mission and growth. Directors will be strategically placed on committees (e.g., Program Oversight, Development, or Finance) based on their specific skill set.

    Key Responsibilities (Applies to All At-Large Directors)

    1. Fiduciary & Governance Duty: Participate actively in the review and approval of the annual budget, financial statements, and compliance policies to uphold the organization's legal and financial integrity.
    2. Strategic Input: Advise the Board and Executive Director on high-level organizational strategy, risk mitigation, and long-term sustainability plans.
    3. Resource Mobilization: Actively participate in the Board’s fundraising efforts, leveraging professional networks to identify, introduce, and cultivate high-value donors and foundations.

    Required Skills & Experience

    All candidates must have a minimum of five years of senior-level professional experience and a proven commitment to non-profit board service. Candidates must possess significant expertise in at least one of the following four areas, which represent a critical need for the Board:

    Core Expertise Required

    • International Programs & Africa Strategy

    Direct experience working in West Africa or Francophone Africa; expertise in digital literacy, microfinance, or development policy focused on the Global South.

    • U.S. Social Services & Workforce Development

    Proven experience in managing, funding, or overseeing U.S. domestic programs focused on job readiness, micro-enterprise incubation, or transitional social services for vulnerable women.

    • Non-Profit Law & Compliance

    Expertise in U.S. 501(c)(3) legal compliance, international regulatory reporting, labor law, or non-profit risk management.

    • Economic Evaluation & Policy

    Deep background in monitoring and evaluation (M&E), development economics, or financial inclusion methods to measure and validate program impact globally.

      • Your personal commitment to WEI's mission of women's economic empowerment.
      • Which one or two key focus areas (e.g., Africa Strategy, U.S. Social Services, Non-Profit Law, or Economic Evaluation) you believe you are best positioned to advise the Board on.
    3. Work Sample (Required): A sample of your strategic or analytical work.

    Work Sample Instructions

    The work sample must demonstrate your ability to provide high-level, critical analysis and strategic thinking. Please submit one of the following options:

    • Option A (Strategic/Policy Focus): A briefing memo or executive summary (1–2 pages maximum) that you have previously authored. This should demonstrate your ability to analyze a complex problem (policy, economic, or operational) and provide clear, actionable recommendations.
    • Option B (Financial/Governance Focus): A document (such as a budget overview, compliance review snapshot, or risk assessment) that you have previously prepared for a Board or Executive team, along with a short paragraph explaining its purpose.
