    Position summary

We are now accepting applications for new members to our Board of Directors. This is a rewarding volunteer opportunity to support a worthy cause and to help Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) achieve its strategic goals. We are seeking individuals with a sincere and passionate interest in animal advocacy.

While the board is not involved in ACE’s daily operations, it is accountable for ensuring that the organization adheres to its strategic direction and works to achieve the strategic goals approved by the Board. The Board monitors the policies and procedures used by the organization to fulfill its objectives and measures outcomes to ensure that goals are achieved and risks minimized.

    Key areas of responsibility

    • Attend and be prepared for bi-monthly Board meetings to discuss key issues and provide strategic guidance and governance.
    • Take an active interest in the development of ACE, contributing ideas and expertise.
    • Ensure effective organizational planning and participate in strategic planning.
    • Plan to remain an active board member for a three year term.
    • Active participation as a board officer and/or on a committee (for example, finance, recruitment, governance, research, and Executive Director evaluation).

    Qualifications

    Required qualifications/skills

    • Experience in the animal advocacy arena including a genuine concern for animal well being
    • Familiarity with the effective altruism movement
    • Team player contributing to positive and productive discussions
    • Ability to devote approximately 10 hours per month to serve as an officer or committee member; prepare for and attend board meetings; and complete other board-related duties
    • Strategic thinker with innovative ideas
    • Focus on accountability for the achievement of short- and long-term strategic and organizational goals
    • An abiding commitment to ACE’s guiding principles

    Desired qualifications/skills

    • Previous board or governance experience
    • Financial and accounting experience
    • Familiarity with animal advocacy in a context outside the U.S. and Western Europe

    Application process

Candidates will be interviewed for their suitability as a potential Board member and then require approval by the Board. An important consideration is ACE’s Conflict of Interest policy for board members. We are currently looking to add three Board members.

Commitment to diversity and equal employment opportunities

Animal Charity Evaluators provides equal employment opportunities and highly values representation, equity, and inclusion. We want to engage all those who can contribute to our mission and make an impact. We offer mission-driven, meaningful work in a remote, flexible environment. We strongly encourage women; people who are Black, Indigenous, or of the global majority (of color); LGBTQ+ individuals; persons living with disabilities; and people of all socioeconomic backgrounds to apply to work with us.

ACE does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, creed or religion, sex, gender and/or gender expression, sexual orientation, body size, national origin, disability, age, marital status, veteran status, family status, genetic information or characteristics (or those of a family member), ancestry, place of origin, socioeconomic status, political belief or activity, conviction of an irrelevant offense, or any other basis prohibited by applicable law.

    About Animal Charity Evaluators

Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in the United States with a globally distributed team dedicated to effective animal advocacy (see our bylaws). ACE’s mission is to find and promote the most effective ways to help animals.

We work toward that mission by evaluating charities, communicating our findings, awarding grants to organizations and promising projects, and fundraising for our Recommended Charities and Movement Grants program. To date, we have considered over 350 animal charities for evaluation, reached over 1.5 million people with our research through our website, awarded 313grants from our Movement Grants, and influenced over $59 million in donations to our recommended charities. We strive to identify ways to alleviate suffering and improve the lives of animals on a broad scale while continually updating our recommendations based on new evidence.
