    Description

    Fight Hunger! Food pantry driver/shopper

1-2 Volunteer(s), with their own vehicles, needed 2 hours per week on an ongoing basis to "shop" for food at the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley's warehouse at 750 Curtner Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125 then deliver to Midtown Family Services.

Volunteer(s) set own hours though hours do need to fit within both Curtner Center Shopping/Hub hours and Midtown Family Services office hours. Additionally, we request that schedules be somewhat regular and kept updated on our company calendar to insure we ourselves are present top open our office door and assist you to unload. Curtner Center Shopping/Hub hours are...

    • Monday: 7:00 am to 12:00pm
    • Tuesday: 7am to 12pm and 12:30pm to 2:00pm
    • Wednesday: 7am to 12pm and 12:30pm to 2:00pm
    • Thursday: 7am to 12pm and 12:30pm to 2:00pm
    • Friday: 7:00 am to 12pm

Midtown Family Services office hours, meanwhile, are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, excluding County of Santa Clara holidays.

Volunteers must complete Second Harvest of Silicon Valley's online training module before starting.

Volunteers must have insurance on their vehicles and complete a liability waiver.

Volunteers must be physically up to the task. A crate of 12 half-gallon cartons of milk weighs about 52 pounds. A bag of potatoes, onions, or carrots, or box of apples or oranges, weighs 50 pounds. A crate of canned goods weighs about 30 pounds. A crate of pasta weighs about 20 pounds. Imagine picking up 4 to 6 crates, boxes, or bags of various foods each time you visit the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley warehouse. Imagine lifting each crate, box, or bag 6 times over the course of 2 hours: once onto a flat bed shopping cart, once onto a scale, back onto the flat bed shopping cart, once into your vehicle, once out of your vehicle onto a dolly, and once from a dolly onto a shelf or into a refrigerator or freezer.
