    Communications Assistant (Volunteer)

    Commitment: 10–15 hours per week

    Minimum Commitment: 6 months

    A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City and operating fully remotely. We empower children affected by cancer to explore their artistic passions through art, music, writing, acting, singing, and other creative mediums. Artistic expression plays a vital role in healing, resilience, and self-confidence—and our work helps children discover their voice during some of life’s most challenging moments.

    Role Overview

    The Communications Assistant supports the execution of A Free Bird’s communications and marketing initiatives across digital and internal channels. This role collaborates closely with the Communications Manager or Director and works cross-functionally with Marketing, PR, Programs, and Fundraising teams to ensure messaging is consistent, engaging, and aligned with the organization’s mission.

    This position is ideal for someone early in their communications career who is detail-oriented, creative, and eager to grow in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

    Responsibilities

    Content & Messaging

    • Draft, edit, and support the creation of content for social media, newsletters, website updates, press materials, and marketing assets
    • Ensure all communications align with A Free Bird’s brand voice, tone, and visual identity
    • Assist with proofreading and quality control for public-facing and internal materials

    Social Media & Digital Engagement

    • Support day-to-day management of social media platforms with timely, engaging content
    • Monitor trends, comments, and messages; assist with community engagement
    • Track and analyze social media and campaign performance using analytics tools
    • Provide data-informed recommendations to improve reach and engagement

    Internal Communications

    • Assist with internal newsletters, announcements, and organizational updates
    • Support communication needs for internal meetings, events, and initiatives

    Collaboration & Brand Support

    • Work closely with Marketing, Design, PR, and Fundraising teams to align messaging and timelines
    • Help maintain brand consistency across all communication channels
    • Monitor brand mentions and flag opportunities or concerns as needed
    • Track communications projects, deadlines, and deliverables

    Qualifications

    • 0–2 years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field (internship or volunteer experience accepted)
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication trends
    • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a remote environment
    • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
    • Basic familiarity with analytics or content management tools is a plus
    • Creative mindset with a willingness to learn and collaborate
