    Mentor a High School Students with Minds Matter NYC!

    ABOUT MINDS MATTER NYC

    For over 30 years, Minds Matter NYC has connected driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college create their future and change the world. Volunteer with Minds Matter NYC and help low-income students achieve their college dreams.

    MENTOR ROLE OVERVIEW

    • Mentors guide, challenge and celebrate students through their three years in the program.
    • Mentors act as caring adults in their students' lives. They provide consistent support while sharing insight from their journey to college and beyond.
    • Minds Matter utilizes a 2:2 model. Mentors work with 2 students alongside a co-mentor to form a quad. You and your co-mentor will work together to form a consistant support system for your students.
    • Your quad will operate within a larger team led by a Team Leader. Each session your Team Leader will facilitate the Minds Matter NYC curriculum designed to cultivate community and guide your student at through each step of their journey.

    WHY VOLUNTEER AS A MENTOR

    • Make a difference in the life of a student. Help them unleash their full potential!
    • Gain new friends, enrich your community, and join a network of service-minded peers.
    • Grow as a leader and sharpen your communication skills.
    • Burnish your resume with volunteer service experience.

    TIME COMMITMENT

    • Mentors commit to three academic school years (through your students' Sophomore to Senior year of high school).
    • Each academic year contains 23 sessions from October to May.
    • Sessions are on Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM
    • There are no sessions over major holidays or school breaks.
    • Volunteers are required to attend 80% of the sessions.

    LOCATION

    Sessions take place on high school campuses in Manhattan. Program locations are organized by program year:

    • Sophomore: Harlem
    • Junior: Chinatown
    • Senior: Chelsea

    QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

    • Graduate of a four-year college or university
    • Team-oriented, responsive, active listener who can serve as a role model for young people
    • Must uphold Minds Matter NYC’s values of community, commitment, and growth
    • Must pass a background check
    • Available in person on Saturdays
