    Description

    Project Learn volunteers will assist instructors and provide tutoring to individuals to earn their GED or learn English as a second language.

    Volunteers will:

    • Interact with students in ESOL to boost their speaking and writing skills
    • Tutor in different subject areas via Zoom or the phone, grade tests, present lessons, etc.
    • Be assisting immigrants and adults seeking their high school equivalency or learning basic reading skills and working toward citizenship or starting a business
    • Assist instructor in classroom, from passing out and collecting worksheets to helping students with their worksheets and understanding what is being presented in class
    • Assist students in logging onto their laptops if needed
    • May tutor a student on individual basis, either in class or outside of class at a library or other public location

    Volunteers should have:

    • GED or college degree
    • Excellent command of English language - grammar, pronunciation and writing
    • Basic computer skills
    • Tolerance of different skill levels of students
    • Patience and willingness to learn and help others
    • Be flexible, friendly, culturally-oriented, respectful, empower students to learn, and build relationships

    Who will be served by this assignment? Adults of all ages who either want to learn to read, obtain their high school equivalency or speak English.

    What is the anticipated benefit of this volunteer service to those receiving the service? Volunteers help students gain the confidence and knowledge to succeed in their goals. They learn from each other as well.

    What specific skills will the volunteer need? For in-person classes, being able to navigate the classroom to assist students. Sitting for part of the class while lesson presented and then helping as needed. Virtual classes require a computer and knowledge of Google classroom.
