AmeriCorps Seniors has two opportunities, the Senior Companion Program (SCP) and the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP).
Senior Companions:
- Serve as allies and advocates to support and befriend fellow seniors who have trouble with daily living tasks.
- Receive pre-service orientation, monthly training opportunities, supplemental insurance while on duty, and may qualify to earn a tax-free, hourly stipend.
- The program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and over to keep seniors independent longer and support family caregivers by serving 15 to 38 hours per week in their clients’ homes.
Foster Grandparents:
- Serve as role models, mentors, and friends to children with educational needs and provide one-on-one tutoring in a Clark County School District classroom.
- Receive pre-service orientation, monthly training opportunities, supplemental insurance while on duty, and may qualify to earn a tax-free, hourly stipend.
- The program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and over to stay active in their communities, serving 15 to 38 hours per week.
Each of these opportunities, dependent upon qualification, come with a small allowance that is non-taxable and does not affect any income-based benefits (i.e., SNAP, Lower Income Apartment rents). To qualify for the stipend is dependent on the volunteer’s current income (i.e., Social Security, SSI, Pension, Part Time Job).
