About Us
A Free Bird is a nationally recognized nonprofit based in New York City, dedicated to empowering children diagnosed with cancer by helping them explore their artistic passions. Through music, acting, writing, painting, and more, we believe creativity fuels healing and self-discovery. Our mission is to bring hope and inspiration through the arts-and we’re looking for passionate changemakers to join us.
About the Role
Are you a creative storyteller who lives and breathes social media? A Free Bird is looking for a Social Media Specialist Volunteer to join our Marketing team. In this role, you'll help shape our online voice, grow our digital presence, and amplify the powerful stories of the young artists we serve. This is a hands-on opportunity to build real-world skills in social media strategy, campaign execution, content creation, and analytics-while making a meaningful impact.
What You’ll Do
- Develop Strategy: Collaborate with the marketing team to craft and implement platform-specific social media strategies aligned with our brand goals.
- Create Content: Design engaging, platform-tailored posts across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Threads. Think visuals, reels, stories, and captions that inspire action.
- Manage Community: Monitor messages, tags, and comments. Respond to our audience in a timely and professional tone, building trust and community along the way.
- Run Campaigns: Plan and execute digital campaigns (including cause awareness days, fundraisers, contests, and artist showcases). Track performance and optimize results.
- Report & Analyze: Use tools like Meta Business Suite, Hootsuite, or Later to pull weekly insights and make data-driven recommendations.
- Stay Trend-Forward: Keep up with platform updates, algorithm changes, content trends, and best practices-then bring fresh ideas to the table.
- Support Paid Ads: Assist in creating content and copy for paid social media campaigns, and track ROI alongside the digital team.
- Boost Brand Advocacy: Identify brand ambassadors and promote user-generated content to highlight our mission and impact.

- You’re fluent in current digital trends and platform culture, and have a sharp eye for what performs well.
- Strong writing, editing, and visual communication skills.
- You're organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage your time across multiple tasks.
- Comfortable working remotely and independently, with reliable access to a computer and internet.
- Experience with Canva, Adobe Express, Hootsuite, Later, or other content tools is a plus.
- Bonus: Experience with social ads or nonprofit marketing.
