    Description

Tutors for Low Literacy Adults and Children, or English as a Second Language Students

Won’t you be our Valentine? Deepen your connection to our greater community and transform a life through the power of literacy.

This February Literacy Together is launching Hearts United for Literacy, with the goal of enlisting 28 new volunteers to serve as tutors (and friends) for the hundreds of adults and K-12 students on our waiting list. Volunteers can choose to help youth (during school days or afterschool) who are struggling with reading or with learning English. You can also work with adults who are learning English, building basic literacy or math skills, or pursuing their GED. Tutoring times and locations are flexible based on the needs of you and your student; while we aim for 2 hours a week for one year, we have substitute tutors available for when you're traveling or need time off. Teaching online is also an option. No teaching experience or knowledge of a second language is necessary; we provide training and all materials.

Currently we have a waitlist of more than 80 adults and more than 100 children who are ready to learn but need the support of a tutor. To learn more about how you can help transform lives in our community through literacy–sign up for this month's on-line orientation here.
