    Description

    Triage Cancer is seeking volunteers who are passionate about helping individuals that have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis make sound financial planning decisions, so that they can find their best path forward. Individuals contact our Legal & Financial Navigation Program with questions about a variety of issues often centered around finances.

    While our team is able to answer questions about the law, we do not have the expertise or capacity to provide financial planning services. We partner with pro bono financial planners to refer callers to, when appropriate. The referral process is as follows: (1) Triage Cancer provides legal navigation services to callers, (2) if we determine the caller would benefit from financial planning services, we would reach out to pro bono financial planning volunteers to gauge capacity/interest; (3) if agreed, we would connect the caller with the pro bono financial planner.

    Volunteer Responsibilities

    • Work with one client;
    • Meet with your client at least twice (Example: one meeting for introductions and data gathering and the other for presenting a mini-plan or answering any specific questions. Volunteers can choose to meet a third time to check-in with the client);
    • Provide financial guidance based on your client’s situation including but not limited to budgeting with a low income, managing emergency reserve and health savings, making decisions during transitions (e.g., job changes, moving, retirement), and more.
    • Spend a minimum of 30 minutes per meeting; meetings will be based on the availability of the volunteer and patient; and
    • Respect financial decisions and goals, confidentiality, and privacy.
