    Project Summary

    This project will establish a network of accessible libraries (fixed school libraries, community branch libraries, and mobile libraries) and provide trained volunteers and hired tutors to support learners with guided study sessions, homework help, reading clubs and remedial support. The initiative targets children aged 5-18, with special focus on low-income and underserved communities.

    Roles and Responsibilities of Board Members

    • Provide strategic leadership and governance to ensure the project achieves its mission of promoting literacy, education, and equal learning opportunities for children in underserved communities.
    • Define, review, and uphold the organization’s vision and values, ensuring that all activities align with the goal of improving access to quality education through libraries and tutoring programs.
    • Approve and oversee the implementation of strategic and operational plans, ensuring the successful establishment of school libraries, community branches, and mobile library units.
    • Support and guide the management team in setting clear educational objectives, monitoring progress, and ensuring effective coordination of volunteer and tutor activities.
    • Ensure sound financial management by approving annual budgets, monitoring expenditure, and ensuring that funds are used efficiently and transparently to support library infrastructure, educational materials, and staff welfare.
    • Oversee fundraising and resource mobilization efforts, leveraging personal and professional networks to attract donors, partners, grants, and sponsors who can support the expansion and sustainability of the program.
    • Promote accountability and transparency by ensuring proper record-keeping, regular reporting, and compliance with all legal, regulatory, and donor requirements.
    • Monitor and evaluate program impact, reviewing performance reports on library usage, student participation, learning outcomes, and volunteer effectiveness to guide decision-making and program improvement.
    • Support the recruitment, training, and evaluation of volunteers and tutors, ensuring that they are well-prepared to provide mentorship, academic support, and positive engagement with learners.
    • Approve and oversee human resource policies, ensuring fair treatment, professional development, and motivation of both paid staff and volunteers.
    • Facilitate partnerships and collaborations with schools, government agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen the program’s reach and impact.
    • Act as ambassadors and advocates for the organization, raising awareness about the importance of literacy and education, and representing the NGO in public, media, and stakeholder events.
    • Identify and mitigate potential risks related to child safety, data privacy, funding sustainability, and operational efficiency.
    • Support community engagement initiatives by participating in outreach events, book drives, reading campaigns, and mentorship sessions to promote inclusivity and community ownership of the project.
    • Ensure child protection policies are in place and enforced, guaranteeing the safety and well-being of all children involved in the project’s programs and activities.
    • Review and approve key organizational policies including finance, HR, child protection, and volunteer management to ensure proper governance and compliance.
    • Maintain strong oversight of the Executive Director or Project Manager, providing guidance, performance evaluation, and accountability for the project’s execution and results.
    • Ensure sustainability of the initiative by supporting strategic plans for long-term funding, library maintenance, and expansion into new communities.
    • Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement, encouraging innovation, collaboration, and best practices in education delivery and community service.
    • Participate actively in board meetings, engage in informed decision-making, and contribute professional expertise, experience, and time toward the success of the organization.
    • Declare and avoid any conflicts of interest, acting always in the best interest of the organization and the children it serves.
