    Description

Volunteer in India with a Women's Empowerment NGO

    About Sambhali Trust

Sambhali Trust is a non-profit organization based in Rajasthan, India, whose focus is the development and empowerment of women and girls. We support marginalized women and girls in developing self-esteem and confidence and help them work towards financial independence by providing them with an education in Hindi, English and Math and training in vocational skills.

We specifically work with the Dalit community, who experience discrimination on a daily basis because of their low standing in India's stratified social hierarchy or 'caste system', and have little or no access to education. They are denied the right to choose their own husband, and often face a high level of verbal, physical and sexual abuse within their family circle and community.

We have more than 20 active projects in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and the rural village of Setrawa. These projects include empowerment centers, where women and children receive a basic education in Hindi, Math and English. In our sewing centers, the women receive valuable vocational training and after they graduate, they have the possibility to sell their products in the Sambhali Boutique to generate an income. Besides the empowerment and sewing centers, we also have two boarding homes and many other special projects.

    Volunteering at Sambhali Trust

Volunteering at Sambhali Trust gives you the wonderful opportunity to do important and valuable work, empowering the underprivileged women and children of Rajasthan. Not only will you help a non-profit organization that changes the lives of hundreds of women and girls, you will also get an insight into the intricacies of Indian culture, and develop an understanding of how a grass-roots, non-profit organization operates.

Our previous volunteers have ranged from 18 to 76 years old, demonstrating that anyone can volunteer and make a difference to our Trust, regardless of age, skill-set or background.

We look for ambitious and motivated people, who believe in Sambhali's Mission to encourage deprived Rajasthani women to reclaim their worth and equip them for a brighter future.

We are looking for volunteers to assist in the following areas:
    • Fashion Design and/or sewing
    • English and/or Math teaching to non-English speakers
    • Administrative Assistance

    Requirements

    • Must have patience, understanding and compassion for women and children of different learning levels and abilities
    • Must be flexible; Sambhali's flexible approach means that the roles are varied and you can take on as many opportunities as you like
    • Although no previous experience is required, it would be an advantage to have experience in any of the areas listed in the position description above

The duration of each volunteer's stay varies, but we urge a minimum of 2 months for those who wish to volunteer as a teacher in our Empowerment Centers, in order to establish and maintain a relationship with the students.
