    Women of Color on the Move (WOCOTM) is a nonprofit public benefit organization committed to empowering historically marginalized communities by advancing health equity, economic empowerment, education, and social justice. Since its founding in 2014, WOCOTM has delivered community-based education, advocacy, prevention, and support programs addressing issues such as substance abuse, maternal and child health, youth development, financial literacy, and community engagement both in the U.S. and internationally.     This mission-driven organization seeks a skilled legal professional to serve in a strategic volunteer leadership role on the Board of Directors.

    Position Overview

    We are seeking a mission-driven Chief Operations Officer (COO) to serve as a Board-appointed officer and member of the Board of Directors.

    The COO provides strategic governance oversight and operational leadership to ensure the organization’s internal systems, processes, and infrastructure effectively support mission delivery and long-term sustainability. This fiduciary leadership role focuses on strengthening operational integrity, regulatory compliance, performance management, and scalable organizational systems.

    The COO works collaboratively with executive leadership and fellow board members to enhance operational capacity, improve performance outcomes, and drive continuous improvement across the organization.

    This is a non-paid, volunteer board leadership position.

    Key Responsibilities

    Operational Strategy & Systems Leadership

      • Lead development and execution of operational strategies aligned with mission and strategic priorities.
      • Design, implement, and continuously improve workflows, systems, and operational processes.
      • Ensure infrastructure supports program growth, service delivery, and scalability.

    Administrative Oversight & Compliance

      • Provide oversight of administrative functions, internal operations, facilities, documentation, and compliance.
      • Ensure adherence to nonprofit regulations, policies, and applicable legal requirements.
      • Support audits, reviews, and operational assessments as needed.

    Performance Management & Metrics

      • Develop and monitor key operational performance indicators and dashboards.
      • Analyze operational data to identify risks, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities.
      • Implement corrective actions and process enhancements to strengthen organizational performance.

    Leadership, Collaboration & Growth

      • Collaborate with executive leadership to support strategic initiatives and program expansion.
      • Provide mentorship and guidance to operations staff, managers, and volunteers as appropriate.
      • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

    Additional duties may be assigned as organizational needs evolve.

    Volunteer Role Notice

    This is a non-paid, volunteer leadership role. Individuals serving in this capacity are not employees of the organization and do not receive financial compensation or employment benefits. Time commitment expectations and responsibilities will be mutually agreed upon in writing.

    Qualifications

    Education & Credentials

    Required:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Public Administration, or closely related field.

    Preferred:

      • Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, or equivalent).

    Preferred Certifications:

      • Project Management Professional (PMP)
      • Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt or higher)

    Experience & Expertise

      • Minimum of 7+ years of senior-level operations leadership experience.
      • Demonstrated experience overseeing internal operations, administrative systems, and compliance structures.
      • Proven ability to design, implement, and scale operational systems.
      • Experience collaborating with executive leadership and cross-functional teams.
      • Strong understanding of performance management, process improvement, and risk mitigation.
      • Nonprofit or mission-driven organizational experience strongly preferred.
      • Commitment to ethical governance, accountability, and mission-aligned leadership.
