    Description

    Peer Supporter

    About Miracle Workers Alliance (MWA):

    Miracle Workers Alliance (MWA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving mental health through community support and engagement. We create safe online inclusive spaces where individuals are able to thrive. Our current programs, including Gamers for Wellness & Peer Support, provide mental health resources through innovative and interactive platforms such as online gaming, virtual events, and 1-on-1 support on Discord.

    +++

    Role Overview:

    MWA is seeking empathetic, trustworthy Peer Supporters to join our volunteer-based mental health support program. Peer Supporters offer confidential, non-clinical emotional support and active listening to community members in need—through both scheduled 1-on-1 chats and safe, supportive group conversations.

    This role is ideal for people with lived experience in mental health who want to give back, be part of a stigma-free community, and provide a listening ear to others.

    Commitment: ~5–15 hours per week (flexible, remote)

    Compensation: Unpaid

    Whether you’re new to peer support or have experience, we provide training, mentorship, and community every step of the way.

    +++

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide peer-to-peer support through MWA’s Discord platform.
    • Use active listening, empathy, and non-judgmental responses to support others.
    • Respect boundaries—Peer Supporters do not provide therapy, advice, or crisis intervention.
    • Participate in onboarding, orientation, and ongoing check-ins with the Peer Support Manager.
    • Log hours and basic activity reports (while maintaining participant confidentiality).
    • Attend occasional peer support team meetings or wellness training sessions.
    • Uphold community safety and ethics guidelines in all conversations.
    • Collaborate with staff and fellow volunteers to maintain a safe and respectful environment.

    +++

    Qualifications:

    • Lived experience with mental health or emotional challenges (you are not required to share your story).
    • Deep empathy, good listening skills, and emotional maturity.
    • Comfortable chatting via text in Discord (or willing to learn).
    • Willingness to follow safety protocols and maintain healthy boundaries.
    • Must be 18+ and able to commit to at least 3 months of volunteering.
    • Open to learning about trauma-informed, culturally sensitive peer support.
    • Passion for building inclusive, stigma-free mental wellness communities.
    • Optional but helpful: experience in a peer support group, mentoring role, or Discord moderation.

    +++

    Why Join Us?

    • Help others feel seen, heard, and supported during tough times.
    • Join a close-knit, kind, and supportive team of peers and advocates.
    • Gain hands-on experience in peer support, mental health advocacy, and community care.
    • Participate in trainings, reflection spaces, and wellness check-ins.
    • Get recognized in the community and receive a letter of recommendation from the CEO.
    • Build your resume, earn volunteer hours, and make a difference—one conversation at a time.

    You don’t need to be a professional to help someone feel less alone. You just need to care.
