Communications Associate (Volunteer)

About A Free Bird
A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. We empower children diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions through art, music, writing, acting, and other creative mediums. By supporting artistic expression, we help children build confidence, resilience, and hope.
Role Overview
The Communications Associate supports the development and execution of A Free Bird’s internal and external communications. This role works closely with the Marketing, Public Relations, Fundraising, and Programs teams to ensure consistent messaging across platforms and to amplify the organization’s mission. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with a passion for storytelling, collaboration, and mission-driven work.
Responsibilities
- Assist in drafting and editing communications for email campaigns, announcements, and internal updates
- Support content creation for website updates, newsletters, blogs, and organizational materials
- Help maintain consistency in brand voice and messaging across departments
- Coordinate with Marketing and PR teams on campaign messaging and timelines
- Track communications projects, deadlines, and approvals using shared documents
- Conduct research to support storytelling, messaging strategy, and outreach efforts
- Assist with proofreading and quality control of public-facing materials
- Support cross-department communication initiatives as needed
Qualifications
- 1–2 years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field (internship or volunteer experience accepted)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and editing abilities
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a remote environment
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
- Comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams
- Passion for nonprofit work and A Free Bird’s mission

This is a remote volunteer role requiring a minimum commitment of three months at 5–10 hours per week.
