Africa Matters Initiative (AMI) is seeking a committed and values-driven Board Treasurer to join our Board of Directors and provide strategic financial leadership as we enter our next decade of impact.

This voluntary, governance-level role is open to candidates globally, with a strong requirement for experience in the South African financial and regulatory context, and a preference for individuals with experience working in or for Africa. We are looking for a finance professional who can support strong financial governance and compliance while contributing to AMI’s long-term sustainability.

Africa Matters Initiative (AMI) is a youth-led, pan-African organisation committed to upskilling and empowering African youth to create positive change in their communities and across the continent. We work across leadership development, social entrepreneurship, and advocacy in 23 African countries.

    About the Role

As Board Treasurer, you will work closely with the Board and Executive Team to ensure AMI’s financial resources are stewarded responsibly, transparently, and in alignment with the organisation’s mission and long-term strategy.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Strategic financial leadership: Provide financial guidance to support mission-aligned decision-making and sustainable growth.
    • Financial oversight and compliance: Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow, and compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Governance and risk management: Support the development and oversight of financial policies, controls, and risk-mitigation practices.
    • Fundraising and sustainability: Collaborate with the Executive Committee and Board to support fundraising efforts and long-term financial sustainability.
    • Reporting and decision support: Present clear and timely financial updates to enable informed Board decisions.
    • Board and crisis support: Participate actively in Board meetings and support the Executive Committee during periods of organisational or financial risk.

    Required Experience & Expertise

    • Finance, accounting, audit, or investment background
    • Demonstrated experience within the South African financial environment
    • Working knowledge of SARS compliance, CIPC requirements, and South African nonprofit financial regulations
    • Experience with nonprofit, social impact, or international organisations is an asset
    • Strong governance mindset and strategic thinking
    • Collaborative, dependable, and values-driven

    Why Join AMI?

This role offers the opportunity to apply your financial expertise to strengthen a youth-led, pan-African organisation, contribute to its long-term sustainability, and serve on a purpose-driven Board during a pivotal growth phase.
