    Description

Become a Volunteer Tutor for an Adult Student

The Literacy Unlimited program at the Framingham Library is looking for volunteers to become English and literacy tutors. An affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, Literacy Unlimited is an adult education program that provides free, individualized tutoring in two categories: ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and BL (Basic Literacy). The highest need at this time is for ESOL tutors. You do not need to have prior teaching experience or speak another language to be an effective English tutor. Requirements for tutoring with the Literacy Unlimited program are outlined below.

    Volunteer tutor responsibilities:

    • Complete 18-hour BL or ESOL tutor training.
    • Prepare individualized student-centered lesson plans for assigned student.
    • Tutor student for 2 hours per week for a minimum of 9-12 months.
    • Support student evaluation activities.

    Volunteer tutor qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Cleared CORI background check.
    • Communication skills, patience, and ability to work with diverse groups.

All prospective volunteers are required to attend an information session prior to registering for the 18-hour tutor training. For details on upcoming information sessions and trainings, please visit https://framinghamlibrary.org/literacy/volunteer/.
