    Accessible Educator Advisor (Volunteer)

    Disability Justice & Accessibility Team

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Location: Remote with NYC-based collaboration as needed

    Type: Volunteer

Works Closely With: Disability Justice Team Lead, IEP & Accommodations Consultant, Education & Program Team Leads

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), and creative expression. Accessibility at MAP is not an add-on—it is a core commitment to dignity, equity, and inclusion.

MAP’s educational programs, books, media, and learning environments are intentionally designed to be accessible, trauma-informed, and responsive to the realities of housing instability and disability.

About the Disability Justice & Accessibility Team

The Disability Justice & Accessibility Team ensures that MAP’s work—across education, publishing, programming, and partnerships—meets high standards of accessibility, compliance, and inclusive design. The team collaborates across departments and with external partners to embed Universal Design and disability justice principles into all MAP initiatives.

    Role Overview

We are seeking an Accessible Educator Advisor to support MAP and its partner schools in creating inclusive, accessible learning environments. This role combines educational advising, disability rights knowledge, and hands-on collaboration with internal teams and affiliated academic institutions.

The Accessible Educator Advisor will familiarize themselves with the ADA, Section 504, the Fair Housing Act, IEPs, school-based accommodations, and broader disability rights frameworks, while also understanding the educational impacts of housing instability. They will advise MAP teams and partner schools on accessible classroom strategies, inclusive program design, and implementation of accommodations aligned with Universal Design principles.

This role works with one team and one school at a time to ensure focused, sustainable implementation, and provides regular updates to the Disability Justice Team Lead.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Advise MAP-affiliated academic institutions on strategies to maximize classroom and program accessibility
    • Support implementation of IEPs and accommodations within MAP programs and learning environments
    • Advise mentors, educators, and program staff on inclusive and accessible instructional strategies
    • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure educational resources (books, curricula, programming) are accessible
    • Create, identify, and share tools that support accessibility for children, educators, and families
    • Apply and uphold Universal Design principles across educational contexts
    • Work closely with the IEP & Accommodations Consultant to identify common accommodations and embed them naturally into programming
    • Identify accessibility gaps and opportunities for improvement across departments
    • Participate in weekly check-ins with the Disability Justice & Accessibility Team
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    • Strong commitment to accessibility and disability justice
    • Experience working with children and/or academic institutions
    • Ability to collaborate across teams in a mission-driven environment
    • Reliability, thoughtfulness, and strong communication skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience advocating for disabled individuals, or lived experience as a disabled person
    • Familiarity with ADA, Section 504, IEPs, and school-based accommodations
    • Knowledge of Universal Design principles
    • Experience working in school or classroom settings
    • Experience liaising with families and caregivers
    • Awareness of accessibility tools for classroom and learning environments
    • Trauma-informed care skills
    • Experience collaborating with diverse teams (education, legal, publishing, training, etc.)

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Weekly meeting with the Disability Justice & Accessibility Team
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • A meaningful role advancing disability justice with real-world impact
    • Opportunities to make educational programs more accessible across systems
    • Collaboration with experienced disability justice advocates and educators
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • The opportunity to help children feel seen, safe, and supported through thoughtful accommodations

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
    • Cover letter (required) describing relevant experience in education, accessibility, or disability justice and interest in MAP’s mission

Build with purpose—help MAP create accessible, dignified, justice-centered learning environments where every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
