    About CALEC

    CALEC is a mission-driven organization dedicated to advancing language education, literacy, and culturally responsive learning through innovative digital tools and programs. We design and support educational platforms and games that promote bilingual learning, reading engagement, and equitable access to education for diverse learners.

    Position Overview

    CALEC is seeking motivated volunteers with an interest in web application develop and educational technology to support the development of interactive, learner-centered digital experiences for bilingual learning between kindergarten and K-5 level. Volunteers will work on a digital reading platform project designed for use by children, educators, and diverse multilingual communities, gaining hands-on experience at the intersection of software development and education.

    Volunteers will engage in the full design-to-development cycle; from learning objectives and interaction design to technical implementation, evaluation and iteration. Interns and volunteers will also have the opportunity to learn how to implement digital accessibility and usability best practices (e.g., WCAG 2.0 considerations) for diverse learners through digital content creation and development.

    Responsibilities:

    • Support the development and maintenance of CALEC’s educational platform, Ri2L (ri2l.org), and tools
    • Build and enhance backend and frontend features for learning applications
    • Work with databases, APIs, and content management systems
    • Integrate UI/UX designs into functional, accessible, and responsive interfaces
    • Collaborate with instructional designers, UI/UX designers, and educators to translate learning goals and wireframes into technical solutions
    • Test and document features for educational use
    • Basic server management & deployment support (hosting, updates, troubleshooting)

    Qualifications:

    • Training in computer science, educational technology, or a related field
    • Interest in building scalable, user-friendly educational tools
    • Interest in developing web applications

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with PHP in Laravel, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and basic SQL
    • Familiarity with learning platforms, LMSs, or content-driven applications

    Time Commitment & Format

    • Flexible, part-time schedule
    • Remote or hybrid options available (depending on location and project needs)
