    Description

Fresh Pond Biodiversity & Climate Citizen Scientist

Calling all humans! You can make a difference in our collective understanding of biodiversity and conservation. Earthwise Aware (EwA | www.earthwiseaware.org) will train you to help support national research surrounding the impact of climate change on the life cycles of plants, insects, and more. It is easy, fun, and no experience is needed!

We offer several opportunities in Middlesex County. We meet on Mondays at 1 p.m. at Lusitania Meadow in the Fresh Pond Reservation (Cambridge).

    • Do you like bugs? We have easy-to-use apps that allow us to gather important data on insects that utilize the plants at the reservation.
    • Maybe you are a plant lover? We monitor the phenology of several trees and other perennial native species that are important in the life cycles of native pollinators and other animals.
    • Interested in pollinators? Pollinators are crucial to our ecosystem. Help us count the number of pollinators that visit the plants surrounding the pond.
    • More of the 'big picture' type? Connect the life cycles of important plant and animal life in the context of a shifting climate.

We are grateful to partner with the Cambridge Water Department and the rangers of Fresh Pond to provide a space where we can collect data and contribute to critical national research databases. This helps us understand how we can create better opportunities for biodiversity and increase conservation efforts in an urban environment.

Visit https://www.earthwiseaware.org/citizen-science/ to learn more about how EwA prioritizes learning about natural history in the Greater Boston area. If you are interested in meeting in person at the reservation to discuss opportunities that are aligned with your interests, contact us at volunteering@earthwiseaware.org.

This is important work, and we need your help! Please join us and become an EwA field volunteer - everyone is welcome!

    With gratitude,

    Sara, Joanne, Kate, and Claire,

    The EwA Fresh Pond team

Express Your Interest in This Opportunity

    Instructions:

Thank you for considering applying. Please make sure you have read our Biodiversity and Climate Participatory Science storyMap.

After reviewing your application, we will contact you. You can also get ahead by attending a field orientation, which we typically recommend as part of our follow-up. This session offers a comprehensive introduction to EwA’s fields of study and fieldwork.

Orientations are held monthly at two locations:

    • Second Monday of the month at Middlesex Fells Reservation (Medford area)
    • Second Saturday of the month at the Somerville Growing Center

The content is the same at both sites and covers our work across all field locations. You can find more details [here]. It is a great opportunity to meet the team, learn about our approach, and ask questions. Afterward, we will provide more field- and data-specific guidance.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
