    Description

    Special Needs Teacher

NEW : Special Needs Teacher Required

Uganda Hands for Hope regularly looks for teachers to help support its teaching programmes and local schools supporting the needs of the Namuwongo slum community. We support children living in the slums with access to free education at nursery, primary and secondary level education, as well as supporting early school drop-outs and adults who are illiterate and are given a chance to learn.

We also run a special needs programme to support children with different forms of disabilities who live within the Namuwongo slums. We require a special needs teacher to come and work along side our current special needs teacher to share ideas about the support we currently provide and how we can improve the support further.

With our friendly and ‘hands on approach’, along with our wealth of experience in development work, management studies and education, we have the skills and knowledge to ensure both the community and the volunteers equally gain significant benefits from all volunteer placements.

There are a variety of volunteering opportunities as teachers or teaching assistants at a variety of different teaching levels. These range from being a nursery school teacher, a classroom assistant, a primary or secondary school teacher or assistant. If you are looking for teaching in a less informal way then maybe assist with teaching a ‘small group of children’ to provide catch-up lessons in reading, writing, or math. We also run adult literacy teaching for mothers/ fathers who are illiterate, or for young adults and girls who have dropped out of formal education. We have plans to develop a variety of vocational skills training, with sewing classes already underway, so the opportunities to assist with teaching are many. We have opportunities for both non-experienced and experienced teachers, qualified or unqualified to help with a variety of different teaching tasks.

Since March 2010 we have started to run creative dance/ singing classes for small groups of children (up to 30 kids at a time). So if you have an interest and ability to teach singing/ dancing/ drama/ craft making/ reading etc, then you would be very welcome to come and share your skills with the Namuwongo community.

We have teaching opportunities most the year round, from 2 weeks to 6 months. These opportunities include assisting/ running the school holidays programmes which are aimed at supporting children with a place to go and have fun/ games during school holiday, keeping them off the slums and the chance to be kids.

    Requirements:

    Qualified special needs training

Experience of teaching special needs children for a minimum of 2 years

Ability to get on well with a variety of people

Ability to communicate effectively in English

Ability to write reports/ updates in MS Word/ XL

To be able to live and work in Uganda

Uganda Hands for Hope is a registered non-profit in Uganda. The only costs for volunteers are to cover food and accommodation, as well as the transport to and from the airport. Through its experience Uganda Hands for Hope has been able to offer volunteers both professional and personal support from the initial inquiry stages before arrival in Uganda, as well as during and after their placements. All volunteers receive an orientation day upon arrival, as well some basic cultural training and awareness. They also receive access to 24 hour help and assistance, regular meetings and debriefing sessions with the project coordinator, safe and secure accommodation, and we are always on hand as and when needed for advice.
