    About the Musconetcong Watershed Association

The Musconetcong Watershed Association (MWA) is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of the Musconetcong River and its watershed for people and nature. The MWA carries out its mission through public education and awareness, water monitoring, sustainable land management promotion, and community involvement. The organization is guided by a Board of Trustees and supported by professional staff, with a focus on planning, education, advocacy, and stewardship. MWA has an annual revenue and expense budget of approximately $1.5 million, with total assets around $3.4 million, relying heavily on contributions and grants.

    Position Overview

The Treasurer is a vital officer of the MWA Board of Trustees, entrusted with the custody and oversight of the organization's financial health. This role requires a financial expert who can provide strategic financial leadership and ensure transparency and accountability in all financial matters. The Treasurer will work closely with the professional finance manager and the Interim Executive Director to manage the MWA's finances in alignment with its mission and legal requirements.

    • Financial Oversight and Governance: Oversee the organization's financial administration, ensuring that all funds are managed responsibly and transparently.
    • Budget Management: Collaborate with the Executive Director and finance staff to develop and present the annual budget to the Board for approval, and monitor actual performance against the budget, addressing any variances.
    • Financial Reporting: Ensure the preparation of clear, accurate, and timely financial reports (e.g., monthly or quarterly statements) for the Board of Trustees and other stakeholders.
    • Compliance and Auditing: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including IRS Form 990 filings, and coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors.
    • Risk Management: Implement and review sound internal controls and risk management procedures to safeguard the MWA's financial resources and prevent fraud.
    • Strategic Guidance: Provide financial advice and support to the Board and staff, contributing to strategic decision-making and long-term financial planning for the organization's sustainability.
    • Liaison: Serve as the primary liaison to financial institutions and external auditors.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Financial Expertise: Strong understanding of finance and accounting principles, preferably with a background as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or a similar designation.
    • Non-Profit Knowledge: Familiarity with non-profit financial regulations and reporting requirements is highly beneficial.
    • Integrity: Must be a person of great trust and integrity, committed to accuracy and transparency.
    • Skills: Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences.
    • Commitment: A passion for the MWA's mission of protecting and improving the Musconetcong River Watershed.
