Summary of Position
The purpose of the Fire Awareness Team (FAT) is to provide a visible presence in Jefferson County Parks & Open Space during prolonged periods of fire danger and park closures. The FAT provides visitor assistance, wildfire education, and fire ban education to enhance the park visitor experience and protect park resources. Members of the FAT will focus park patrol efforts at park closures to further promote safety and report any potential smoke and fire hazards.
Duties
Educate park visitors about the dangers of human-caused wildfires in the urban interface and the benefits of low intensity fire in the ponderosa pine ecosystem.
Report closure violations and safety issues to Park Ranger staff; report smoke checks to Jeffcom Non Emergency or 911 (depending on severity).
Initiate contact with park visitors on issues related to the fire ban and park closures.
Complete and submit a patrol log after each assignement.
Assist JCPOS staff at educational events.
Requirements
Must be at least 18 years old.
Have prior experience interacting with individuals and groups in a professional setting and/or demonstrated ability to educate the public concerning regulatory issues.
Have a commitment to the mission and goals of Jeffco Parks & Open Space.
Possess physical ability to work outdoors, in various weather conditions and on natural surface terrain.
Successfully complete the Fire Awareness Team training program and assist with at least one park closure over a three-year period.
Wear the approved volunteer uniform.
Provide own mode of transportation, appropriate outdoor clothing, and gear.
Attend scheduled meetings and training sessions.
