    Description

    SCOPE OF WORK: The International Rescue Committee (IRC), works in the United States welcomes newly arrived refugees and immigrants, supports them in their resettlement, and provides holistic services to help them build new lives in their communities. The Financial Capabilities intern will support the IRC in NJ’s Financial Capabilities program. This program aims to increase the financial literacy of participants, provide them with financial coaching and access to low-interest loans.

    This program aims to empower participants in becoming self-sufficient through classes that better help them maintain their own finances. The intern will support the program by providing financial coaching and counseling services to program participants, while also coordinating monthly financial education workshops for all IRC clients. The intern will assist clients with learning about U.S. financial institutions and systems, banking, credit, budgeting, taxes, and other financial literacy topics. This is an unpaid position that is open to current college students, graduate students, and post graduate students with course credit available.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide one-on-one financial coaching for clients   
    • Conduct budgets and financial surveys with clients   
    • Track client notes and progress in a spreadsheet and on ETO software  
    • Communicate effectively in person and by phone   
    • Facilitate monthly literacy workshops for clients
    • Accompany clients to bank appointments   
    • Adhere to IRC policies, particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy   
    • Other related duties as assigned   

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    1. Intern will learn how to effectively manage financial educational and coaching programs.
    2. Intern will learn how to provide direct services to immigrant populations across various backgrounds.
    3. Intern will learn how to effectively case note client meetings and progress using ETO software.

    REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers must be based in the U.S. Interns must be based in US, must be a US citizen or have US work authorization, must be enrolled in post-secondary institution or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within last 2 years. 

    • Available for a minimum of 15 hours per week
    • The ideal candidates will have prior experience in the field of personal financial management, preferably in a counseling or coaching role.
    • Basic proficiency in digital literacy
    • High school degree required
    • Ability to speak Spanish, Arabic, or Haitian Creole highly preferred, ability to speak Dari/Pashto or French also preferred
