    Description

    ESL Tutoring - Help Someone Reach Their English Speaking Goals

    Apply today for our winter tutor training:

    The training will take place on the following three days. Potential volunteers will need to attend all three training sessions. Lunch will be provided on Monday and Wednesday.

      • Monday, February 23, 2026 (10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)
      • Wednesday, February 25, 2026 (10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)
      • Friday, February 27, 2026 (10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)

    Position Overview:

    Volunteer tutors will be trained and then matched with a moderate to advanced adult English language learner. Tutors will create lessons to help their learners increase their vocabulary and fluency to reach their English language goals. You do not need to know another language in order to become a volunteer tutor. All tutoring will take place in English.

    Responsibilities:

    • Tutor an adult learner one times each week for 1.5-2 hour sessions at a Santa Monica Public Library location
    • Create lessons to help an English language learner meet their fluency goals
    • Submit monthly time logs

    Qualifications:

    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently and clearly
    • Possess patience, flexibility, and excellent oral communication skills
    • Must check email regularly and have basic computer skills
    • Fingerprint/ live scan clearance is required
    • Must be 18 years or older

    Training Provided:

    • Tutors will receive 10 hours of training
    • All materials are provided
    • Ongoing training and individual coaching sessions

    Time Commitment:

    • 6 months or more
    • The program strives to match tutors with a learner within 3 months of attending the tutor training or provide other opportunities to work on skills while waiting for a match.

    Potential volunteers will go through an applicant screening and interview process. We regret that we will not be able to accept all tutor applicants into the program.
