Chief of Human Resources & Operations (Volunteer)

    People, Operations, Finance & Accounting

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Location: Remote with NYC-based collaboration as needed

    Type: Volunteer

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), creative expression, education, housing innovation, and community-based programs. MAP’s mission depends on strong internal systems that are ethical, trauma-informed, and operationally sound.

Human resources, operations, finance, and accounting at MAP are not back-office functions—they directly shape safety, compliance, trust, and sustainability across the organization.

About the People, Operations, Finance & Accounting Function

This function ensures MAP operates with integrity, clarity, and accountability. It oversees people operations, volunteer and staff systems, organizational operations, financial management, and accounting practices. The function safeguards compliance while supporting a healthy, mission-aligned workplace culture.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Chief of Human Resources & Operations to lead MAP’s people systems, operational infrastructure, and financial oversight. This role includes responsibility for human resources, volunteer operations, organizational operations, accounting, and finance, ensuring all systems work together cohesively and ethically.

The Chief of Human Resources & Operations serves as a senior leader and strategic partner to the CEO / Executive Director and collaborates closely with division chiefs to ensure MAP’s internal systems support mission delivery, compliance, and long-term sustainability.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead and steward MAP’s human resources, operations, finance, and accounting strategy
    • Oversee HR systems, including volunteer and staff onboarding, offboarding, policies, and compliance
    • Ensure trauma-informed, dignity-centered people practices across the organization
    • Oversee organizational operations, workflows, and internal controls
    • Provide leadership over accounting and financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, and controls
    • Partner with Development and Leadership on financial planning and sustainability
    • Ensure compliance with labor laws, nonprofit regulations, and internal governance standards
    • Support risk management, continuity planning, and operational resilience
    • Maintain clear communication and responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    • Senior experience in human resources, operations, finance, accounting, or nonprofit administration
    • Strong understanding of nonprofit compliance, people operations, and financial oversight
    • Ability to manage complex systems while maintaining clarity and accountability
    • Experience working cross-functionally with leadership, legal, and program teams
    • Strong judgment, discretion, and ethical decision-making skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience in nonprofit or youth-serving organizations
    • Familiarity with volunteer management systems and HR compliance
    • Experience overseeing accounting or financial reporting functions
    • Background in operations, governance, or organizational development
    • Comfort supporting distributed teams using Google Workspace

    Commitment

    • Volunteer executive leadership role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Executive-level leadership experience across HR, operations, and finance
    • Direct influence on organizational health, compliance, and sustainability
    • Collaboration with senior leadership and cross-division partners
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • A meaningful role strengthening systems that protect children, staff, and mission

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:
