    About ClearPathNYC

ClearPathNYC is a nonprofit tech platform helping young people in New York City access housing, food, mental health, and social wellness resources. With over 7,000 resources, we are building the “Google Maps for homeless youth” — a trusted, easy-to-use tool that puts vital resources at young people’s fingertips.

    Role Overview

We’re seeking Volunteer Software Engineers to join our technology team under the guidance of our Chief Technology Officer (CTO). This is a flexible, remote-friendly volunteer opportunity for individuals passionate about coding and using technology to create social impact.

    Responsibilities

    • Write, test, and maintain code in our FERN stack (Firebase, Express, React, Node.js).
    • Build and optimize features for Firebase database and authentication.
    • Support development of new functionality, bug fixes, and platform improvements.
    • Collaborate with the CTO and other volunteers to align technical work with user needs.
    • Participate in occasional team check-ins and share progress via GitHub.

    Qualifications

    • Proficiency in JavaScript, with experience in React, Node.js/Express, and Firebase (database, authentication, or cloud functions).
    • Understanding of APIs, databases, and modern web application design.
    • Ability to commit 12 hours per month (flexible scheduling).
    • Interest in building technology that makes a real-world difference.

    Nice to Have

    • Full-stack development experience.
    • Knowledge of Firebase security rules, hosting, or cloud functions.
    • Familiarity with authentication, security, or data privacy practices.
    • Previous volunteer or nonprofit experience.

    Why Volunteer With Us?

    • Use your technical skills to directly impact thousands of young people in NYC.
    • Build hands-on experience with Firebase and modern web technologies.
    • Collaborate with a mission-driven team and be recognized as part of ClearPathNYC’s growth story.
