    Tech & Tasks Tutor

    Position Overview:

    This is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of adults whose limited literacy and/or digital literacy is a challenge in their everyday life. Volunteer tutors work with patrons on reading, writing, or technology related tasks that can advance their quality of life.

    What to expect:

    • Work with patrons one-on-one on by understanding barriers/challenges to completing their task and offering support. Tutors may model the task and/or searching for answers to solve a task. Tutors may also connect patrons with local resources for support. Tutors and patrons will work together to meet their goal. Examples of common tasks include, resume writing, reading documents, completing online applications, navigating websites, downloading apps and using smartphone settings. Tutors do not need to be tech wizards but they do need to be resourceful and comfortable using the internet to troubleshoot problems online. Staff are also available to support the volunteer tutors and assist as needed.

    Qualifications:

    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently and clearly.
    • Compassionate, patient and kind.
    • No teaching experience is necessary but strong communication skills are a must.
    • Reliable
    • Must check email regularly and have basic computer and word processing skills.
    • Understand how to use basic technology: laptops, smartphones, and email.
    • Able to use internet search to find answers.
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive personality and demeanor.
    • You enjoy and/or have experience working with diverse populations.
    • Fingerprint/ live scan clearance is required.
    • Age 18 or older.

    Training Provided:

    • Tutors will receive 1.5 hour training covering teaching techniques and strategies to assist someone with their goal, available resources, and program best practices.

    Time Commitment:

    • At least 4 hours per month. Tech & Tasks currently takes place on Thursday from 2-4pm at Main Library and will be launching from 4-6pm on Tuesday afternoons at the Pico Branch Library. We ask that volunteers be available to volunteer at least 2 sessions per month.
    • Volunteers self-schedule according to their availability.
    • 6 months or more

    Potential volunteers will go through an applicant screening and interview process. We regret that we will not be able to accept all tutor applicants into the program.

    2 shifts available:

    • Thursdays @ Main Library: 13:45 to 16:00 PST
    • Tuesdays @ Pico Branch Library: 15:45 to 18:00 PST
