    Description

Rainforest Restoration Project in Sri Lanka

Looking for a place to feel at home in Sri Lanka while contributing to a meaningful NGO project? Make our BASECAMP your base in Sri Lanka-your home away from home. A place to return to when you're tired of travelling, to soak up the local vibe away from tourist crowds. If you love forest gazing or want your travels to give back to the environment, this is the place for you.

This particular volunteering project is an ecosystem restoration (reforestation) effort on a 50-acre degraded hill, with the potential to expand to 250 acres. We're literally growing a rainforest from scratch. What was once a burnt, barren slope is already transforming into a thriving, green landscape.

We need passionate volunteers to plant trees during the rainy season, remove invasive species, and water young plants during the dry months. Our plant nurseries also need regular care and maintenance. Beyond fieldwork, we welcome anyone with skills in tech, research, video creation, or promotional content to help spread our message and strengthen our mission. Become a guardian and ambassador of the rainforests we’ve permanently protected.

Volunteers stay in a simple rural house with two bedrooms, a guest room, dining room, small traditional kitchen, and two external bathrooms. For those who love rustic experiences, we offer a completely natural mud house, a two-storey bamboo house under construction, and an almost-finished tree house. There are also hammocks and open spaces-almost inside a protected forest.

We offer delicious, home-cooked local meals prepared by a kind village woman (the poorest in our village, whom we chose to support through this opportunity). She provides three meals a day, including Ceylon tea, for around €7 Euro per person. If you prefer, you’re welcome to cook your own food using our woodstove.

    On-site

    Rajwaka Forest Reserve

    Balangoda, Sri Lanka
    Directions
    • ----- How to arrive at the project location ---------
    • * From the Airport to Colombo by a bus or taxi (Bus costs less than 500 Rs and a taxi would be at around 5000 Rs max).
    • * From Colombo fort bus station to Badulla / Balangoda bus. Its the 99 route. (If its Badulla bus you will get down at or near the Balangoda clock tower because Badulla is way past Balangoda. Cargills food city in Balangoda is a good location to check on maps. Its near the clock tower)
    • * From Balangoda town, its ideal to take a Tuk Tuk to Rajawaka, where the project is located, ask us for the location map.
    • * Remember you need to take the by road after the one the google suggests from the main road. The one google shows runs through a private land. The one google suggests is a Tarred/Asphalt road while the correct by road is the one that you will find 200M after the one that google suggests. Its a CONCRETE road just before a small bride on the main road runs alongside a small stream on to your right. Here is the location to the correct by road.
    • ----- if you are coming from Down South ---------
    • * Come to Galle.
    • * Either take a highway bus to Kottawa interchange (Close to Colombo). It takes only 1 hour from Colombo on the highway.

OR take Galle to Balangoda Direct BUS operates daily at 1 PM from Galle. This bus arrives in Balangoda around 6-7 PM)

    • * Then take a bus to Badulla / Balangoda bus
    • * ALL THE OTHER DETILAS REMIANS SAME AS ABOVE AFTER THAT :)

Please try to arrive early as you might encounter wild elephants in the night on the road.

    Good luck !
