    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, literacy development, academic enrichment, creative arts, social-emotional learning, and community-centered programs, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

Music is central to MAP’s mission. Through MAP Roots enrichment, Threads of Voices, The Bells I Hear, and youth storytelling initiatives, we use music to cultivate healing, identity, confidence, community, and artistic expression.

    About the Role

We are seeking Musician Volunteers to support youth programming and contribute to the launch of MAP’s new YouTube music channel and studio content platform.

Musicians will help create original music, mentor youth, and collaborate on video-based music projects aligned with MAP’s mission. This role blends music instruction, creative production, and digital content development.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Facilitate music workshops for youth (instrumental, vocal, songwriting, beat-making, rhythm, music appreciation).
    • Develop and create original music for MAP’s YouTube channel, music videos, and studio recordings.
    • Collaborate with the Storytelling & Media Division to develop soundtracks, score videos, and shape MAP’s musical identity.
    • Support MAP’s production team in filming, recording, and developing music-centered content.
    • Introduce students to your musical background and support their creative growth.
    • Design culturally responsive, emotionally supportive music activities for youth.
    • Support youth-led songwriting, performances, and creative storytelling projects.
    • Maintain a trauma-informed, positive learning environment.
    • Check and respond to email daily, with responses within 48 hours.
    • Commit to ongoing performance improvement through reflection and feedback integration.

    Qualifications

    • Experience as a musician, vocalist, songwriter, producer, or music educator.
    • Ability to compose, arrange, or produce original music.
    • Familiarity with music recording software (Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools, GarageBand, etc.).
    • Experience working with youth or community-based programs preferred.
    • Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset.
    • Commitment to creative expression, equity, and youth empowerment.

    Bonus Skills (not required)

    • Experience producing music for YouTube, video content, or digital storytelling.
    • Background in Latin music, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, Dominican genres, or global musical traditions.
    • Audio engineering or studio production experience.
    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred).

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role, 5–10 hours per week, depending on programming and production needs.
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
    • Hybrid: In-person in NYC and/or remote via Google Meet.

    What You’ll Gain

    • The chance to help launch MAP’s music and YouTube presence from the ground up.
    • Experience composing and producing music for youth-centered digital content.
    • Opportunities to mentor youth through creative workshops.
    • Collaboration with MAP’s educators, storytellers, filmmakers, and production teams.
    • Portfolio-ready music, studio recordings, and video credits.
    • Letters of recommendation and professional references.
    • The fulfillment of helping young people find confidence and voice through music.
