    IT Security Training Specialist (Volunteer)

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

    Division: Technology & Systems

Location: Remote (with potential NYC-based collaboration)

    Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, literacy development, and creative expression, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

The Technology & Systems Division ensures that MAP’s programs, communications, and digital operations remain secure, efficient, and accessible. From internal data protection to online learning safety, MAP prioritizes cybersecurity as part of its commitment to protecting both staff and the vulnerable youth we serve.

    About the Role

We are seeking an IT Security Training Specialist to help design and implement cybersecurity awareness, data protection, and digital safety training for MAP volunteers, staff, and program participants. This role combines technical expertise with educational design — ensuring that MAP’s community practices safe and ethical digital behavior while protecting sensitive information.

This position is ideal for someone passionate about cybersecurity, education, and empowering communities through technology literacy.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop and deliver cybersecurity awareness and data protection training for MAP volunteers and staff.
    • Design training materials, guides, and simulations focused on phishing prevention, secure communication, and digital privacy.
    • Collaborate with MAP’s HR and Technology teams to ensure compliance with data security protocols and confidentiality policies.
    • Create easy-to-understand learning modules for non-technical users, emphasizing practical, trauma-informed approaches to technology safety.
    • Support MAP’s digital infrastructure and ensure proper handling of sensitive participant data.
    • Develop youth-friendly educational materials that promote responsible technology use, online safety, and digital citizenship.
    • Monitor compliance with cybersecurity best practices and provide regular updates or refreshers.
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours.
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by updating materials to reflect the latest cybersecurity trends and threats.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
    • Experience designing and conducting cybersecurity training or technical workshops.
    • Familiarity with data protection laws and frameworks (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, FERPA).
    • Knowledge of security awareness platforms, simulation tools, and e-learning systems.
    • Excellent communication and instructional design skills.
    • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into accessible, engaging training content.
    • Strong ethical standards and a commitment to digital safety, equity, and inclusion.

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week.
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration sessions.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Opportunity to design and lead cybersecurity education in a mission-driven nonprofit.
    • Experience creating real-world IT and data protection protocols within a social impact setting.
    • Collaboration with a cross-functional team of educators, HR professionals, and developers.
    • Professional references, mentorship, and leadership development.
    • The fulfillment of protecting an organization dedicated to empowering youth and families.
