    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, creative expression, and housing initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

Our Communications & Creative Media team captures the heart of MAP’s work — telling powerful stories of resilience, hope, and community impact. We are seeking a Photographer Volunteer to help document our programs, events, and community partnerships through compelling imagery that strengthens our mission and digital presence.

    About the Role

We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic Photographer Volunteer to visually document our organization’s activities, events, and community stories. Your photos will help us tell our story, strengthen engagement, and enhance our digital presence across our website, publications, and social media platforms.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys capturing authentic human stories and wants to use their creative skills for social impact.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Capture high-quality images at MAP events, workshops, and community activities
    • Edit, organize, and prepare images for web, print, and promotional use
    • Collaborate with the content, marketing, and design teams to select impactful visuals
    • Ensure a consistent visual style aligned with MAP’s mission and brand identity
    • Maintain photography equipment and manage digital files and archives
    • Support visual storytelling initiatives for campaigns, reports, and social media
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by refining workflow, image quality, and creative storytelling impact

    Qualifications

    • Experience in event, portrait, or documentary photography (professional or hobbyist)
    • Strong creative eye and attention to composition, lighting, and narrative detail
    • Familiarity with photo editing software (Lightroom, Photoshop, or similar)
    • Ability to work collaboratively and meet project deadlines
    • Ownership of photography equipment preferred
    • Interest in social justice, youth empowerment, or nonprofit storytelling a plus

    Commitment

    • Volunteer position requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Hybrid: in-person photography in New York City with remote editing and coordination

    What You’ll Gain

    • Opportunity to build a portfolio capturing real community impact and social change
    • Collaboration with creative professionals, mentors, and program leaders
    • Experience in nonprofit storytelling and digital media production
    • Professional references, mentorship, and credit in published materials
    • The fulfillment of using art to amplify voices and stories that matter
