Family caregivers for hospice patients face immense physical and emotional demands. They often provide 24/7 support, leaving little time for their own self-care, appointments, or rest. VITAS is seeking dedicated volunteers to offer the priceless gift of respite care, providing relief for these hardworking caregivers.
Your presence offers comfort and companionship to the patient, enabling their loved one to take a much-needed break by:
- Sitting with a patient for a pre-scheduled period (typically 2–4 hours).
- Providing a supportive, compassionate, and calm presence.
- Engaging in non-medical companionship, such as reading aloud, listening to music, or simply holding a hand.
- Offering a listening ear and friendly conversation, or simply sit quietly with the patient.
- Offering an opportunity for the caregiver to step away from their duties, finish tasks, or rest.
- Communicating any needs to the patient's care team.
