    Description

Volunteer Practicing English with Newly Arrived Migrants! NYC

Hi! We are AID FOR LIFE, an organization (NYC based) focus on providing support and community to migrants who recently arrived in New York. Every Saturday morning we host community events where we give away hot meals, clothing; and provide free legal aid, job development opportunities, talks and more! Our weekly events are host in the Lower East Side, and we receive around 50-100 people every Saturday morning.

One of the programs we are starting is an english session "Listen and Repeat", focus on motivating our people to learn english as a second language. Our goal is not to teach them a perfect pronunciation nor make them learn the basics, but to encourage them to leave the mindset of fear and explore a much needed quality.

    Requirements:

    • Our volunteer must be bilingual in Spanish and English, with Spanish as their native (first) language.
    • Feel comfortable with public speaking, as you will face different kind of people and need to be prepare to find a social way to motivate them to join or continue the activity.
    • Be available at least 1 Saturday morning a month
    • Preferable if the volunteer has experience in social work, psychology, human resources or any field that requires clear communication and understanding.

The challenge for the volunteer is to make them break mental barriers and help them reach a stage of motivation where they can feel capable of starting to fully learn the language in a more academically way. We are motivating them to take the first step.
