The Borikua Taíno Foundation, an Indigenous-led nonprofit organization dedicated to cultural preservation, community empowerment, and the revitalization of Borikua Taíno identity across Puerto Rico and the diaspora, is currently seeking student volunteers and academic partners to support our Indigenous Archives of Puerto Rico initiative — a community-based project focused on genealogical research, archival preservation, and documentation of Indigenous family lineages across the island.
We believe this opportunity aligns well with the interests of students interested in History, Anthropology, Latin American; Caribbean Studies, Native & Indigenous Studies, Library Science, Statistics, Cultural Studies and/or Sociology.
About the Volunteer Opportunity:
Commitment: 40 hours (flexible scheduling)
Roles: Archival research, data entry, digital file organization, historical analysis, oral history transcription, community engagement
Skills gained: Hands-on experience in decolonial research methods, Indigenous genealogy, cultural heritage preservation, and ethical data practices
What We’re Looking For:
Students interested in cultural research, public history, or service-learning
Departments or professors open to offering credit, internships, or volunteer hours
Clubs that might promote this opportunity or co-host a speaker/event to raise awareness
How You Can Support:
Share this opportunity with your students or members
Co-develop a service-learning partnership or independent study opportunity
Invite us to present at your next class or club meeting
All volunteers will receive a formal certificate of completion, mentorship, and potential letters of recommendation. More importantly, they will contribute to an ongoing effort to reclaim and preserve Indigenous histories that have long been overlooked or erased. I would be happy to provide a flyer, sample volunteer agreement, or speak more about this project in a brief Zoom meeting.
