    Description

At times, Kindergarten students may require a bit more assistance with their foundational literacy skills. These skills are essential for their future success as readers and learners.

ReadingPals is a statewide initiative focused on literacy that utilizes small group environments to equip students with the necessary skills for achievement. The materials for ReadingPals are supplied by the United Way of Central Florida and have been approved for use by Polk County Public Schools.

ReadingPals involves a commitment of one hour each week throughout the school year, with volunteers assigned to a kindergarten classroom of their choice, on a day that works for them (if feasible).

Volunteers engage in reading activities with two groups of two students (chosen by the classroom teacher) for half an hour with each group. To ensure the greatest impact and foster positive relationships, they consistently work with the same students throughout the year. Each group reads the same book weekly.

All volunteers participate in a two-hour orientation training and must undergo a background check before they can work in the schools. No prior teaching experience is required.
