    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, education, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and technology-enabled programs, MAP serves families with care, dignity, and integrity.

Because MAP works with children, families, volunteers, donors, and digital platforms, privacy, data protection, and ethical data governance are foundational to our mission and legal compliance.

    Purpose of the Role

The Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) leads MAP’s privacy, data protection, and information governance strategy. This role ensures that MAP responsibly collects, stores, uses, and protects personal data—especially sensitive data related to children and families—across programs, technology platforms, and communications.

The CPO provides strategic oversight, policy leadership, and practical guidance to ensure compliance with applicable privacy laws while embedding a culture of trust, transparency, and ethical data use.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead MAP’s privacy and data protection strategy across all programs and platforms
    • Develop, maintain, and oversee privacy policies, data handling standards, and consent frameworks
    • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., COPPA, FERPA where applicable, NY SHIELD Act, GDPR principles as relevant)
    • Advise leadership on privacy risks related to technology, data collection, and digital tools
    • Collaborate with Legal, HR, Technology, and Program teams
    • Review vendor, platform, and technology practices for privacy alignment
    • Guide incident response planning and data breach preparedness
    • Support training and awareness for staff and volunteers on privacy best practices
    • Participate in governance reviews and policy updates
    • Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours

    Qualifications

    • Experience in privacy, data protection, compliance, legal, cybersecurity, or information governance
    • Strong understanding of data privacy principles, consent, and risk management
    • Familiarity with child- and youth-related data protection considerations
    • Ability to translate legal and technical requirements into practical guidance
    • Strong judgment, discretion, and ethical orientation
    • Clear communication and collaborative leadership skills
    • Commitment to mission-driven, equity-centered, and trauma-informed work

    Bonus (Not Required)

    • Legal background or privacy certification (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM, etc.)
    • Experience in nonprofit, education, healthcare, or youth-serving organizations
    • Familiarity with data governance in cloud-based or app-based platforms
    • Experience drafting privacy notices, consent forms, or data-sharing agreements

    Commitment

    • 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote collaboration with optional NYC-based participation

    What You’ll Gain

    • Senior leadership experience in nonprofit governance and privacy strategy
    • Meaningful impact protecting children, families, and communities
    • Portfolio-relevant policy and governance work
    • Collaboration with executive leadership, legal, and technology teams
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
