Brief Organizational Description:
The Hopewell-Prince George Friends of the Library is a non-profit whose mission is to support, improve, and promote the Appomattox Regional Library System, which services the libraries of Burrowsville, Carson, Disputanta, Hopewell, Prince George, McKenney, and Rohoic. The Friends of the Library raises funds through various means to finance the various needs of the library system like books, equipment, and programs.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Members shall be appointed by the executive committee. We have different officers and standing committiees to serve on.
Duties are specific to officer and committee you’re serving on. Here are the following roles:
President: To preside over and conduct meetings; to appoint all committee chairs and serve as an advisor to committees; to fill by appointment any intra-term officer vacancies to be approved at the next business meeting.
Vice-President: To perform the duties of the president in the absence of the president; to serve as Chairman of the Program Committee.
Treasurer: To keep and maintain the financial records of the corporation; to submit a budget at the April business meeting.
Secretary: To record attendance at all meetings; to take minutes of all meetings; to keep a list of the membership, together with their addresses; to confirm the members are notified in advance of the time and place of meetings; to conduct the correspondence of the corporation.
Standing Committees
Membership: The Membership Committee contacts individuals and corporations to obtain their support for the objectives of the Hopewell/Prince George Friends.
Public Relations: The Public Relations Committee develops community awareness through media, local business, industry, and corporations.
Program: The Program Committee develops group activities by planning events, refreshments and assisting with other functions as requested.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
As a member of the Executive Board, you will meet at least four times a year. Please make an effort to attend all board meetings and help out with as many FOL-sponsored events as possible. You must also be a dues-paying member of the FOL. An individual membership is $10, and a lifetime membership is $100.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
We’re looking for volunteer board members with different backgrounds such as: fundraising, accounting, nonprofit management, and marketing. However, people of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. First and foremost, the applicant must be available to attend meetings and help out with sponsored events.
Time Commitment:
Attendance to board meetings is mandatory. There are at least four per year. There may be more that are hybrid or virtual through Zoom. These are typically held in the early evening and last about one to one-and-one half hours. We also encourage board members to attend and help out with our events that are typically in the evenings or over the weekend.
