    Middle School Mentor

    A Middle School Mentor that builds on the heart-centered approach of your Elementary Success Mentor model, while adapting to the unique needs of adolescents—especially around identity, peer pressure, and academic transitions.

    Job Description: Middle School Mentor

    Position Type: Part-time or Volunteer

    Location: Local Middle Schools (Grades 6–8)

    Reports To: Program Coordinator or School Liaison

    Overview

    Middle School Mentors are caring, consistent adults who support students navigating the complex transition from childhood to adolescence. Through weekly check-ins, encouragement, and active listening, mentors help students build confidence, improve attendance, and stay connected to their goals and community.

    This role is ideal for community members, parents, retirees, and volunteers who believe in the power of mentorship, resilience, and intergenerational wisdom.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Build Trusting Relationships:
    • Meet regularly with assigned student(s) to offer guidance, celebrate wins, and help navigate challenges like peer pressure, academic stress, or identity shifts.
    • Support Attendance & Engagement:
    • Encourage consistent school attendance and participation. Help students set personal goals and track progress.
    • Foster Belonging:
    • Create a safe space for students to express themselves, ask questions, and feel seen.
    • Partner with Families & Staff:
    • Collaborate with school teams and caregivers to identify barriers and connect students to resources.
    • Model Positive Choices:
    • Share life lessons, coping strategies, and affirm students’ strengths and potential.

    Qualifications

    • Passion for supporting youth development
    • Strong communication and empathy skills
    • Ability to commit to weekly check-ins (20–30 minutes per student)
    • Familiarity with adolescent challenges and school culture
    • Background check required (if working directly with minors)

    Commitment

    • Weekly Mentoring: 1–2 sessions per week, ideally for the full school year
    • Training Provided: Orientation plus optional ongoing support
    • Flexible Scheduling: During school hours or after-school programs
