    All volunteers over the age of 16 are required to complete a background check, a waiver of claims/photo release form, and an emergency contact form.

    Description

    The Shaker Historical Society is seeking dedicated and hands-on volunteers to help maintain and beautify our outdoor spaces. Gardens and Grounds Stewards play an important role in caring for our garden beds and landscaped areas, ensuring that the grounds remain attractive, welcoming, and safe for visitors. This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in gardening, landscaping, or horticulture.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist with planting, weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, and general maintenance of garden beds and landscaped areas
    • Help maintain tidy, safe, and inviting outdoor spaces for visitors and programs
    • Identify and report any issues related to grounds upkeep, such as pests, invasive species, or damaged plantings
    • Use hand tools and equipment safely and responsibly (tools provided by the organization during office hours)
    • Follow direction from staff regarding gardening priorities and best practices
    • Lead and/or participate in seasonal clean-up efforts (spring and fall) as needed

    Qualifications:

    • Enjoy working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
    • Basic knowledge of gardening practices preferred
    • Ability to bend, kneel, lift light to moderate loads (up to 30 lbs), and perform physical tasks
    • Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or with a team
    • Willingness to follow safety guidelines and instructions
    • Must pass a background check if age 16 or older
